Where the semiconductor content of a high-volume, 3.5-inch desktop drive was roughly $17 in 2000 (down from $38 in 1993), the content dropped to $13.95 this year, according to Hudson. That is roughly $10.60 for ASIC or application-specific standard product components like the read-channel and hard-disk controller (HDC) elements for what some IC makers call the SoC (system-on-chip) plus $3.35 for standard components such as interface controllers, memory buffers and discrete motor driver transistors. The industry is rapidly pushing toward a $9 electronics cost, Hudson said.
